These deeds date from the early Meiji period, an era when land ownership in Japan was under reform and private ownership legalised. These deeds were issued by the government as a basis for levying taxes. 

Each title concerns unique parcels of land and is hand written. These deeds are over 100 years old and show individual signs of wear.
