OUJIGAMA : mortar & pestle
A pair that are as beautiful at rest on a shelf as they will be useful in the kitchen, grinding sesame seeds, spice blends, and more. The suribachi (mortar) has fine, sharp, hand-worked grooves inside its high-sided bowl, while the surikogi (pestle) is crafted from pepper wood, traditionally valued for its purifying properties by Japanese herbalists.
The pestle is lightweight, ergonomic and smooth, while the grooves of the mortar are cleverly designed to direct wayward seeds back into the bowl, and produce a satisfying and surprisingly easy motion.
The Seto-based Oujigama pottery originally began as a producer of these traditional mortar and pestles, and this handsome piece brings 3 generations of craftsmanship to your kitchen.
