This tanzaku is a colour print from an original woodblock. Printed in 1934 for a Japanese women's publication this tanzaku depicts the game of karuta in which a poem and corresponding picture are matched.
Traditionally tanzaku boards are displayed as decorative objects in a home's entry way and often depict the four seasons, flora and fauna or scenes from classical Japanese literature.
